Intern Evaluations
Supervision and Training
Intensive direct supervision in individual and group counseling is a significant component of the training program. Training includes video supervision. Personal exploration and awareness is valued and encouraged while personal boundaries are respected. Interns receive supervision individually for two hours and as a group for two hours on a weekly basis. Individual supervision is provided by licensed counseling and clinical psychologists. Supervision for the intern group is the responsibility of the Training Director. Case consultation also occurs on a weekly basis during Case Conference Meetings with staff psychologists.
Distance education technologies are not currently used for training and supervision.
Intern Evaluations and Requirements
The Training Coordinator oversees the training program and monitors intern progress throughout the year. The Training Committee, which includes clinical supervisors, seminar leaders, and group co-leaders, meets monthly to review the progress and development of all interns.
Interns receive ongoing feedback within their supervisory relationships regarding professional strengths, areas for growth, and progress toward professional and profession-wide competencies. Competence is assessed through multiple methods, including direct observation of clinical work; collaboration on outreach and consultation activities; structured and narrative evaluations of clinical performance; client feedback; case presentations; clinical documentation; and written reflections or summaries of training experiences. Formal evaluations occur at baseline (end of October), midyear (end of January), and the conclusion of internship (end of July). At each evaluation point, the Intern Evaluation Form is completed collaboratively by clinical supervisors, seminar leaders, and group therapy supervisors. Supervisors review their feedback directly with the intern, and the intern meets with the Training Coordinator to review the overall evaluation, discuss progress, and identify developmentally appropriate training goals. Interns have an opportunity to respond to their evaluations both formally and informally. Once completed and signed, the evaluation and a summary letter are sent to the intern's academic program Director of Clinical Training.
Evaluation is reciprocal, and interns are expected to provide feedback about their supervisors and the training program throughout the year. Feedback is gathered formally through designated evaluation forms and informally through individual and group supervision and other training activities. Interns are encouraged to identify ways to enhance their training experience and the effectiveness of the program. At midyear, a representative of the intern cohort is also invited to a Training Committee meeting to share general, cohesive feedback from the cohort, which the committee considers in making program improvements. The Training Coordinator is available to assist interns with training concerns or intern-supervisor conflicts and, when appropriate, will follow the Intern Grievance Procedures outlined in the Training Manual.
