The Perrine group uses a surface catalysis approach at the air/liquid/solid and gas/solid interface to connect chemistry at complex interfaces. Increased weathering events from rising CO2 levels have impacted infrastructure degradation, water quality, and constrained resources. In water systems, surface chemistry occurs on iron-based pipeline surfaces and mineral interfaces in the environmental. At these interfaces, chemistry is complex, where metals react with dissolves gases and aqueous species, resulting in redox processes and surface corrosion. This seminar will present the Perrine group's research on iron surface chemistry, oxidation, and film growth that shed light on mechanisms affiliated with water disinfection and CO2 capture.
